Tree Surgeon vs Gardener: Who Should Cut or Remove a Tree?

Tree surgeon vs gardener is one of the questions we get asked most. Both do valuable work — but they are not interchangeable. A gardener maintains a garden. A tree surgeon (arborist) is a specialist trained to work on trees at height, under load, and with tools that can kill in the wrong hands. Here's when to call which.

What does a gardener do?

A gardener typically handles planting, weeding, lawn care, light hedge trimming and general garden tidy-ups. Many gardeners are excellent at what they do — but their training and insurance rarely extend to major tree work.

What does a tree surgeon do?

A tree surgeon — properly called an arborist — is trained in climbing, rigging, chainsaw use, aerial rescue, and tree biology. Jobs include crown reductions, felling, dead-wood removal, TPO-compliant work, storm response and power-line clearance.

Why tree work is different from garden maintenance

Tree work is regulated. It involves working at height, using chainsaws under load, and dealing with wood that behaves differently once cut. A single misjudged cut can drop several hundred kilos in the wrong direction.

Climbing, felling and safety training

Qualified tree surgeons hold NPTC / City & Guilds certifications for climbing, aerial rescue and chainsaw use. They train continuously and follow British Standard BS3998. Gardeners generally do not.

Insurance, qualifications and equipment

Public liability insurance for tree work is a specific policy. Gardeners' insurance rarely covers climbing or felling. If a gardener damages a house while cutting a tree, the homeowner can end up liable — always check.

When to call Woods Tree Specialists

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a gardener cut down a small tree?

For very small, low-risk trees, yes — but anything larger, near buildings, or protected should be handled by a qualified tree surgeon.

Are tree surgeons insured differently?

Yes. Tree surgery public liability policies specifically cover climbing, felling and chainsaw work. Standard gardener policies usually don't.

How can I check if someone is qualified?

Ask to see their NPTC / City & Guilds certificates and public liability insurance. Any legitimate arborist will happily show both.

Why does BS3998 matter?

British Standard BS3998 is the recognised code of practice for tree work. Following it is a good indicator of a properly trained arborist.

Is a tree surgeon more expensive than a gardener?

Per hour, usually yes — but the job is done safely, insured, and to a professional standard. For real tree work that difference is well worth paying.
