Cherry Picker Tree Surgery: When Is a MEWP Needed for Tree Work?

Cherry picker tree surgery — properly called MEWP tree work — is often the safest, fastest way to deal with awkward or dangerous trees. Not every job needs a MEWP, but where climbing isn't safe or practical, a platform is by far the better tool. This guide covers when we use one and why.

What is a MEWP or cherry picker?

A Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP), commonly called a cherry picker, is a machine that lifts an operator on a stable platform to work at height. In tree surgery it is used when climbing the tree isn't the safest option.

When cherry pickers are used in tree surgery

Common cases include storm-damaged trees where the structure can't be trusted with a climber's weight; dead or brittle trees; trees leaning over roads or buildings; and very tall reductions where a platform is faster and safer than a full climb.

Awkward access trees

Some trees sit right up against buildings, fences or highway lines. A MEWP lets us position the operator exactly where the work is, without swinging on ropes over glass or slate.

Large tree reductions

Very tall reductions — 20 metres and up — often go quicker from a platform, especially on repeated pruning cycles. Time savings translate into a lower cost to the customer.

Safer working at height

Working from a stable platform is one of the safest ways to carry out tree work when the tree itself is unsound. The owner of Woods Tree Specialists is fully MEWP qualified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a cherry picker more expensive than climbing?

Not always — for large or awkward trees the MEWP is faster and can work out cheaper overall.

Do you need access for a cherry picker?

Yes — usually a level route in and space to set up. We assess this at the quote stage.

Can you use a MEWP on a soft lawn?

With ground protection, often yes. Very soft or waterlogged ground may require boards or an alternative approach.

Is a cherry picker safer than climbing?

For unsound, dead or storm-damaged trees, yes — climbing a compromised tree is a serious risk.

Do you own your own MEWP?

We hire in the correct size machine for each job, so the equipment always matches the tree — not the other way round.
